There are two narrators in The Elegance of the Hedgehog: the concierge at 7, rue de Grenelle, a fifty-four-year old widow named Renée Michel, and Paloma Josse, the twelve-year old daughter one of the wealthy families living in the house. This is hardly an uncommon theme in literature - in fact, the whole plot has been 'done' before. Review 2: The question that this book seeks to answer is "What is worthy of love?". Unfortunately it just didn't do it for me. However what I can't forgive is that - given such a great seed for the story such a captivating style to describe food - how could the book remain so shallow, so unentertaining? It was like scratching the surface of something interesting in one moment and then after half a page giving up on it and jumping on the next character, next thought. Sometimes even too baroque if I might say, but that's something to forgive. Review 1: Oh, the food descriptions are mouthwatering and beautiful in this book.
